Introduction
Throughout all the history of humankind, there have been wars. Every year, many lives are lost because of these wars. War creates fear. It diminishes our quality of life. What are the causes of war? Would it be possible to live in a peaceful world?
You are called by the United Nations to find solutions to war. It is your job to determine whether a world of peace is possible. At the end of your research, you will report what you have learned to the United Nations. You might even be the people who help to restructure the world.
The Task
As a member of the United Nations Committee in Pursuit of a Peaceful World, you will examine the words and actions of people who have received or been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. These people show in their words and actions what might be possible.
You will be divided in your studies so that each of you will have one Nobel winner to study. You will put together your information carefully. Then you will bring this back to your group to begin to make decisions.
The Process
To accomplish the task, you will do the following:
- First you'll be assigned a person to study.
- Once you have the name of the person, you will begin your search
- Go to the Interlochen blooger website. Find your name and click on it. You will see a page with websites and questions for you to answer. Follow the directions given. Be sure to write out the answers to the questions. You will need these later. You will also turn these in for a grade, so make sure you are using correct English. Your answers must be typewritten.
- Once everyone has finished answering the questions, you will each bring your answers to class. You will then be assigned to a small group where you will share your information.
- Here are the things you need to do in your group:
ASSIGNMENT
- Make a list of personality traits that make these people special, for example, courage.
- List ideas you found in your study that are particularly important. These should be things you could share with other members of your group who are also seeking a peaceful world.
- Each member of the group will contribute one quotation from the person you studied that is especially meaningful.
- Begin to develop a Power Point presentation.
- In your group, create five Power Point slides per student. These should include the following:
- The name of your person and your quotation on Slide I.
- One visual image, such as a picture of the person, must be used.
- Write about the issue that was important to each person.
- What actions did they do to work for their ideas?
- What were the results of their actions?
- You must have a typed narrative of 7-9 lines for each slide. You may use this as a guide for your oral presentation. You will turn in the narrative to be graded after your presentation. You must cite your source at the bottom of each slide.
